Ramblers are the real deal

17/06/2008 3:32:00 PM
RAMBLERS stamped themselves as serious grand final contenders with a big win over Cougars at Cummins on Saturday.

A cool, overcast day at Cummins was what greeted Cougars, who were hosting Ramblers in the local derby.

Ramblers were on a high after a good win against the in-form Lock, and Cougars had scored a much-needed win against Eyre United.

Cougars won the toss and kicked to the Southern end, taking advantage of a slight northerly breeze.

Cougars dominated the early minutes of the game and were soon on the scoreboard through Dale Bache, who was enjoying a return to form, picking up plenty of early touches.

There was plenty of pressure from both sides but it was Cougars dominating with two goals to Hazelgrove and one to both Wedd and Meaney.

Ramblers could have applied more pressure but poor kicking in front of goals was letting Cougars off the hook.

Ramblers’ only goal for the quarter came at the 22-minute mark when Simon Pedler goaled from a set shot and at quarter time Cougars led 5-4 to 1-3.

Ramblers came out of the quarter time huddle fired up and soon were taking the game up to Cougars.

Jim Holman lead the way with a tremendous work rate, and his team-mates soon hopped on board.

Simon Pedler was grabbing everything up forward and kicked three goals for the quarter.

Rowan McDonald kicked two for the quarter with singles to Quigley, Pilgrim, Crettenden and Blacker.

Cougars were completely shell shocked by Ramblers’ nine goal second quarter and managed to score only one point.

At half time the tables had been turned as Ramblers led 10-9 to 5-5.

Ramblers were quickly into attack in the third, as Simon Pedler kicked his fifth, but Cougars lifted their work rate and started taking the game up to Ramblers.

Luke Turnbull was working hard in the ruck, as was his brother Cory in the middle, while Luke Moroney and Doug Green were also digging deep to prevent the game blowing out.

Four goals apiece in the third kept Cougars in the game but Ramblers were still well on top at three quarter time and led 14-9 to 9-5.

After a five-goal head start in the first quarter, Cougars were completely over run by the end of the game.

Pedler and Holman provided great targets up forward for the likes of Fitzgerald, Quigley, Cuddeford and Scott Blacker, playing his first game after a stint overseas.

Cougars found it hard to find much in the way of positives and will have to do some sole searching as they face up to unbeaten Tumby Bay this week.Great Flinders
