PORT Lincoln tennis player Darren Polkinghorne finished his tour to Darwin on a winning note when he took out the Sky City 18 years and under singles championship over the June long weekend.

After tasting victory last weekend in the 16 years and under singles and training hard all week, Darren, 15, went into the tournament as the number three seed.

Winning convincingly into the quarter finals, he had to dig deep when he come up against Daniel Alameh from Riverdale, Western Australia.

After to losing to Alameh in Perth, Polkinghorne was better prepared for this match, winning a spot in the semi 7-6, 6-4.

This brought him up against number one seed Robert Martin, 18, from Scarborough, Western Australia.

With both players yet to lose a set for this event, the scene was set for a high-class match.

Polkinghorne was keen to continue his winning ways when he outplayed his opponent 6-2, 6-4.

In the final he was able to produce some of his best tennis for the tournament when he won over Sean Royal from Campsie, New South Wales, 6-1, 6-2 to take out the title.

This is his best result so far with the event being a Level 7 Optus Junior Series Tournament, and shows the training and work is really starting to pay off.

He also took out the men’s open singles consolation final and made it to the semi final of the men’s open doubles with partner Dylan McCloskey from Dalkeith, Western Australia.

His ranking will now be around 170 in Australia for male tennis players next month and will set his whole year up.
