Time to get tidy

THERE is still time to enter in this year’s KESAB Tidy Towns awards, but make sure entries are in soon as the deadline has already passed.

Entries were supposed to be in Monday, but Tidy Towns director Luke Callaghan said any last minute entries would be accepted if people let the organisation know as soon as possible, so it could arrange a suitable time to come and meet them.

“We have changed the process a bit in how we have ‘boxed up’ the achievements of communities, but the heart and soul of what we do is about supporting how communities work together to live sustainably in our environment,” he said.

“This year we have asked that participants give a brief summary of what they are doing, we’re not asking for anything complicated, just what they could jot down off the top off their heads in a few minutes.”

Koppio Smithy National Trust Museum has already submitted its entry.

It has highlighted the installation of three, 40,000-litre water tanks with overflow directed into the nearby CFS tank.

KESAB sees this as a great example of different parts of the community working together.

The museum operates in a sustainable manner by only using water that falls on its roof, plus it has several energy saving measures in place.

The museum allows visitors to experience and understand the area’s history and actively demonstrates that sustainability isn’t anything new even though it is as important as ever.

Changes to the awards include new online entry options, regional workshops and regional annual awards presentations.

Entries will require participants to include project information in their submission allowing initial assessment prior to judging, which will reach all corners of South Australia.

Environmental categories have been reviewed with stronger focus on sustainability across water, waste, energy, education and innovation, biodiversity, but retaining strong community links.

For more information, including entry forms, visit www.kesab.asn.au or call 8234 7255. Entries can be sent to towns@kesab.asn.au, faxed to 8234 7266 or posted to 214 Grange Road, Flinders Park 5025.
