FRIDAY’S rally aginst mineral shipments from Port Lincoln marked the launch of a community campaign to persuade the State Government to look at alternatives for mineral exports.
Community Action Group member Gyn Hyde said minerals should not be shipped from Port Lincoln and the State Government should look at a multi-user deep-sea port.
Mrs Hyde said the boats assembled in the bay were a “magnificent spectacle” but it wasn’t just the seafood industry represented at the rally.
“Friday was a statement to the government that the community and the fishing industry do not want minerals shipped from Port Lincoln.
“The fishing industry and the and the Community Action Group are working together because we both have the same goal and that goal is do it once and do it well.
“The risks are for our lives on the roads; for our lifestyle and the character of our town; and the third risk is to our industries, not just fishing, there could be grain contamination if it’s shipped from the main wharf, and tourism.”
