Kirton plan for tennis

3/07/2008 11:25:00 AM
THE hunt for a new home for tennis in Port Lincoln is continuing and the council has set its sight on Kirton Point Oval.

The council has ruled out moving tennis to Ravendale because of the high cost of establishing new facilities there, and a plan to locate tennis at the old netball court site fell through because the State Government is using the land for a new emergency services centre.

Council chief executive officer Geoff Dodd said Kirton Point Oval may be the only other option.

An informal meeting was held to look at the feasibility of soccer and softball moving to Ravendale to make way for tennis at Kirton Point.

Mr Dodd said Kirton Point Oval still met the tennis association’s criteria of being next to a school and in a central location, and was big enough to comfortably accommodate enough courts with space to expand further if necessary.

He said the current clubrooms could also be renovated.

“It’s quite doable on Kirton Point Oval but we would need to accommodate all the sports.”

The Port Lincoln Soccer Association is looking to expand and upgrade its facilities and moving to Ravendale could help that happen, Mr Dodd said.

But hockey would have to be prepared to share its grass.

The association would like lighting so it can train later and Mr Dodd said the council could be prepared to install lighting on the turf pitch next to hockey and the main oval may be used for soccer carnivals.

Mr Dodd said softball could use the main oval in the summer because cricket was based on the second oval.

He will meet with softball, soccer and tennis representatives again in the next couple of weeks to gauge support for the proposal.

“If they all say yes we could get on with it now.”
