LOCAL women have given more than 600 bras to support women in Fiji who cannot afford new bras.
The bras have been collected in the past few months for “Uplift Fiji”, a project that has been sending pre-loved bras, nursing bras and sports bras to disadvantaged Fijian women through Rotary International World Community Service since 2005.
Port Lincoln Zonta and local ABC radio both started local campaigns earlier this year to collect bras for the project.
Port Lincoln Zonta Status of Women committee chair Margaret Glover said she had sent 276 and last week there was about another 150 collected.
Emma Pedler from ABC West Coast has collected 190 bras.
“The response has just been unbelievable,” Mrs Glover said.
She said she had even been sent some bras from a lady at Gawler East who had heard Port Lincoln Zonta was doing a collection for Uplift Fiji.
Many Fijian women can’t afford $40 for a new bra because wages range from $1.50 to $4.50 an hour and it is difficult to find the sizes most in demand, size 14 and bigger, in second hand shops.
Second-hand bras in bigger sizes can still be donated to Uplift Fiji in Port Lincoln at Lincoln Lingerie or the ABC studios in the Civic Centre.
