Tumby wants your underwear for money

18/03/2008 6:42:49 AM
TUMBY Bay residents are getting abreast of cancer research, by encouraging people to get out their bras and boxers and make them into art.

The local Red Dunes scrapbooking group is organising BRAvo, a fundraising event for the Cancer Council’s Pink Ribbon Day, which will feature a Wall of BRArt, as well as a supper and auction and a scrapbooking event.

Organiser Jane Southon said BRAvo was a unique idea, and would be “a lot of fun”.

“We are asking interested people to decorate a bra, undies or boxers however they like - they can scrap it, embroider it, paint it, quilt it - anything,” she said.

“It doesn’t have to be brilliant - just have a bit of fun.

“The one condition is it has to have a pink ribbon attached to it somewhere.

The artwork cannot be crude, dirty or in bad taste, and it does not have to be practical - it doesn’t ever have to be worn, unless you want it to.

The works of BRArt will be displayed in the gallery at the SCION skills centre in Tumby Bay and there will be prizes for individuals, businesses and groups who put in larger submissions.

Donations for an auction are also being sought.

Ms Southon was inspired to hold the event after cancer affected her family.

“My grandmother passed away from cancer, and my brother in law had lung cancer.

“Nearly every person in Australia has someone close to them survive or die from cancer.

“Without research a cure will never be found.

Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in Australian women.

If all Australian women lived to the age of 75 years, then one in 11 women would develop breast cancer before this age.

Over 11,000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer each year in Australia.

You can get involved in just the wall of art, or you can also attend one of the events to show your support.

She is welcoming entries from all over Eyre Peninsula as well as further afield.

The submission fee is $3 an item, and they have to be in by mid-June.

All donations made at the events are tax deductible.

Fundraising events to purchase items for the auction will be held over the next few months.

The event is planned for the weekend of July 5 and 6, but dates may change due to the proximity to school holidays.

For more information or to submit items, contact Jane Southon on 8688 4252 or email jane@red-dunes.com, or ring Katish Carr on 8688 2431.
